Picture this: a dark, starry night at my observatory, where I’m whipping up some gourmet ramen, vibing to my tunes, when—BAM BAM BAM—someone’s hammering on my door like they’re auditioning for a horror flick. My heart does a backflip. Nobody visits me unannounced. I live miles up a dirt road that’d make a monster truck whimper. Plus, I’d hear any car crunching gravel from a county away. So, with the bravery of a guy who’s seen too many slasher films, I crack open the door, spatula in hand, ready to fend off a zombie… and it’s my buddy Rich. Looking like he just outran a bear.

“Rich, where’s your car?” I ask, peering into the darkness for his beat-up sedan. His eyes are wide, his voice shaky: “It’s… over a cliff.” Cue the suspense music. He spins a wild tale about dodging a fallen tree, only to yeet his car off the road and into the abyss. He had to hike to my place. I’m thinking he’s either concussed or pulling my leg, so I channel my inner action hero. “Hop in the van, buddy. We’re rescuing your ride.”

We rumble down my dirt road, the van groaning like it’s got a personal grudge. Rich points to a spot near the cliff’s edge. “Stop here.” We step out, and holy plot twist—there’s his car, 20 feet down, impaled on a tree stump through the passenger door, teetering like it’s auditioning for a stunt in a Fast & Furious flick. One wrong move, and it’s bye-bye car, maybe bye-bye us. My van’s no tow truck, and I’m not Indiana Jones. “Yeah, nope,” I say. “We’re calling the pros.”

Back at the observatory, we summon a tow truck—30 minutes, they promise. We head back to the crash site to wait, joking about Rich’s new career as a stunt driver. But as we round a corner two miles down the road—BLAM—we’re blinded by a million watts of cop-car lights. “STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE!” booms a voice that could wake a coma patient. I shoot Rich a look like, “Dude, what did you do?” We stumble out, hands up, looking guiltier than a cat next to a shattered vase.

The cops swarm us, all squinting and suspicious. “What’re you doing out here? Where do you live? Know anything about a break-in at Mrs. Smith’s?” I’m clueless, but Rich, pale as a ghost, pipes up: “Uh, well, I did knock on her door 40 minutes ago… after I drove my car off a cliff.” Record scratch. Turns out, Mrs. Smith, who’s deaf in one ear, mistook Rich’s desperate knocking for a home invasion and called the entire law enforcement roster. We’re talking sheriff, local PD, undercover guys in slick jackets, maybe even the dang FBI. It’s like we stumbled into a Law & Order crossover episode.

The cops aren’t buying our story. “We drove that road. Saw nothing.” So, we lead them to the crime scene—er, crash site. When they spot Rich’s car doing its balancing act on that stump, their faces drop. You can almost hear their dreams of a high-stakes bust deflate. Turns out, every cop in a 30-mile radius had floored it here in under 15 minutes, probably hoping for a career-making arrest. Instead, they get us: two idiots and a car with worse luck than a cartoon coyote.

One by one, the cruisers peel out, leaving just one grumpy deputy to babysit us until the tow truck arrives. He lasts five minutes, takes a leak on a tree (classy), and as he zips up, tosses us a sarcastic, “Good luck!” before speeding off into the night. Thanks, Officer Enthusiasm. The tow truck finally shows, works some kind of voodoo magic, and hauls Rich’s car back to solid ground. By now, it’s late, and Rich is ready to limp home.

I clap him on the back, grinning like a Cheshire cat. “Epic visit, man! Next time, maybe don’t yeet your car off a cliff?” He laughs, but underneath you can see there won’t be a next time. As for me, I head back to my observatory, crank the music, and wonder if my ramen’s still edible. Just another night in the at the observatory!
