Alfred Spalding Russell commanded Kenya from 1 April 1942. Uboat.net ends that command on 1 January 1943. The naval-history chronology, which does not print his name, records a command change on 8 January 1943. The command line uses the chronology for the relief. He had her for the Pedestal convoy, including the torpedo from the Italian submarine Alagi on 12 August 1942, and for the Tyne repair that followed. He died on 29 August 1945.

Uboat.net gives his birth as 7 July 1897. It gives no place and no parents. The death line reads 29 August 1945, aged 48, "HMS Victory IV (accounting section, Petersfield) / Died off illness."

The page lists him as midshipman from 31 July 1914, acting sub-lieutenant from 15 July 1916, sub-lieutenant from 15 January 1917, lieutenant from 15 February 1918, lieutenant-commander from 15 February 1926, commander from 30 June 1931, and captain from 30 June 1938. It says it has no further career note.

Before Kenya the page gives him the sloop Grimsby from 10 February 1939 to 11 December 1939, the light cruiser Delhi from 16 December 1939 to 27 May 1941, and the heavy cruiser Norfolk from 20 January 1942 to 12 March 1942. He received the Distinguished Service Order on 10 November 1942, while he had Kenya. The page does not give the citation. The naval-history account of Pedestal is the ship's, not a statement that the decoration was for that convoy.

He left Kenya in January 1943 and died on 29 August 1945, still short of fifty, of an illness, the death recorded against Victory IV at Petersfield. Nothing between the command and that death was on the page.
