- USS Conway (DD-507) Captain from 13 July 1945
Arthur Gernt Harrison was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy. On 13 July 1945 he became commanding officer of the destroyer USS Conway (DD-507), and he held that command through the last weeks of the Pacific war and the first year of peace.
USS Conway was a Fletcher-class destroyer, the second Navy ship named for William Conway, a sailor remembered for his conduct in the Civil War. Bath Iron Works laid her keel at Bath, Maine, on 5 November 1941, launched her on 16 August 1942, and placed her in commission on 9 October 1942. Her first commanding officer was Nathaniel Scudder Prime. She fought through the Solomon Islands campaign in 1943 and 1944 and stayed with the Pacific fleet for the later offensives. For her service in the Second World War the ship received thirteen battle stars.
Harrison came to her after most of that fighting was over. Japan agreed to surrender in mid-August 1945, a little more than a month after he took command, and Conway spent the next year coming down from wartime duty. He remained her commanding officer until 25 June 1946. On that day the destroyer was decommissioned and placed in reserve at Charleston, South Carolina.
The ship later returned to service. After conversion to an escort destroyer she was recommissioned at Boston on 8 November 1950, served in the Korean War, and on 30 June 1962 went back to the designation DD-507. A deployment from July through December 1966 took her to the western Pacific during the Vietnam War. She was stricken on 15 November 1969 and sunk as a target on 26 June 1970. Harrison's command was the last year of her first commission.
