Captain Arthur Thomas Moen, Navy, Naval Academy class of 1918, had George Clymer (APA-27) from her commissioning on 15 June 1942 until 12 September 1943.

He had her for the landing in French Morocco in November 1942 and for the first runs in the Southwest Pacific. On 19 April 1943 she evacuated 38 Chinese and Fijian women and children from Guadalcanal to Noumea. That voyage was his.

Captain Frank Russell Talbot, Navy, Naval Academy class of 1921, relieved him on 12 September 1943. The landing at Cape Torokina on 1 November was Talbot's. Captain Murvale Talcott Farrar had her from 1 January 1944, including Saipan and Guam. Captain John Arthur Snackenberg had her from 5 September 1944, including Leyte and the overhaul at San Francisco. Captain William Howard Benson had her from 25 January 1945. She sailed the next day, so the passage to Okinawa was Benson's. The command list ends Benson's tour only with the year 1946.

The captains who had her after 1946 are a long list. She was decommissioned on 31 October 1967.
