- HMS Mauritius (80) Captain from 23 October 1944 · Relieved on 16 September 1946
Charles Alfred Evelyn Stanfield commanded Mauritius from 23 October 1944 until 16 September 1946. He had her for the last Home Fleet operations off Norway, for the hit she took on 28 January 1945, and for the Birkenhead refit that was still going on when Japan surrendered. He is not Charles Alfred Godfrey Nichols. The shared given names are not the same man.
Uboat.net gives his birth as 6 June 1900. It gives no place, no parents, and no death.
The page lists him as midshipman from 15 July 1916, acting sub-lieutenant from 15 May 1918, sub-lieutenant from 15 January 1919, lieutenant from 15 June 1920, lieutenant-commander from 15 June 1928, commander from 31 December 1934, and captain from 31 December 1939. It dates his retirement 8 July 1949.
Before Mauritius the page gives him the sloop Deptford from 11 January 1938 to 19 January 1940, as a commander, and the light cruiser Colombo from 8 February 1940 to 28 August 1941. In September 1939 Deptford was exercising off Alexandria with submarines. He was mentioned in despatches on 15 May 1945. The page does not say for what.
The same table also gives him the battleship Malaya from 25 April 1945 to 28 April 1945, three days that fall inside the Mauritius command. Mauritius was then in the Birkenhead refit that had begun on 25 February. The page does not explain the overlap. The naval-history chronology does not name him, and it does not mention Malaya.
Uboat.net ends the Mauritius command on 16 September 1946 and retires him on 8 July 1949. Nothing between those dates, and no death, was on the page.
