- USS Tern (AM-31) Lieutenant (junior grade), 12 June 1944 – 23 November 1945
George Francis Carey, a lieutenant (junior grade), commanded Tern from 12 June 1944 to 23 November 1945. The end date is the day she was decommissioned. NavSource gives the name, the rank, and both dates.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship are on the line. He relieved Lieutenant (junior grade) William Earl Hummel.
On 9 July 1944 Tern joined a convoy for the Marshalls and reached Eniwetok on the 28th. For five months she towed craft to Majuro, Tarawa, Ulithi, and Guam. On 4 January 1945 she shifted to Ulithi for another five months. On 26 May she sailed for Leyte and arrived at San Pedro on 1 June. The ship's history, which has her bound for Leyte, prints the arrival as San Pedro and does not call it San Pedro, California. She was then assigned to tow targets for submarine training at Guam, reached Apra Harbor on 20 June, and stayed until the tug Cormorant relieved her on 1 September, after the surrender. The next week she started home by Eniwetok and Pearl Harbor, reached San Francisco in mid-October, and was prepared for inactivation. She was decommissioned on 23 November 1945 and struck on 5 December. NavSource adds a transfer to the War Shipping Administration in July 1947 and a sale, and says her later fate is unknown. Carey's tour ends on the decommissioning day. The sources do not keep him with her through the 1947 sale.
No duty after 23 November 1945, and no date of death, was found.
