Lieutenant Commander Hisashi Ishii became captain of the destroyer Yudachi on 10 April 1941. He came from command of the older destroyer Shiokaze and relieved Terumichi Arimoto on the bridge. Yudachi was a Shiratsuyu-class ship built at Sasebo and completed in January 1937. She then served in Destroyer Division 2 with Murasame, Harusame, and Samidare, under Destroyer Squadron 4 of the Second Fleet.

The division spent the rest of 1941 preparing for the move south. From 26 to 29 November Yudachi steamed with the squadron from the Terashima Strait to Mako in the Pescadores. On 7 December the division left Mako to cover the landing at Vigan, on the northwest coast of Luzon, and on 22 December it screened the larger landing in Lingayen Gulf.

In January 1942 Yudachi went with the division into the Netherlands East Indies. She escorted the landing at Tarakan and then the assault on Balikpapan. On 26 January, after the night action off that port, she was ordered to tow the disabled Patrol Boat No. 37 into shallow water. The tow could not be kept up, the task was cancelled, and the patrol boat was abandoned. Late in February the division screened the eastern Java invasion force, and on 27 February Yudachi was with that force when it met the Allied cruisers and destroyers in the Battle of the Java Sea.

The ships then turned back toward the Philippines. Yudachi reached Subic Bay from Tarakan on 16 March and took part in the blockade of Manila and the occupation of Cebu. Early in May she sailed from Mako to Yokosuka and went into dock for repairs. On 25 May 1942 Kiyoshi Kikkawa relieved Ishii.

Ishii's later appointments were command of Destroyer Division 22 and then Destroyer Division 21. Yudachi remained in service under Kikkawa. In June she screened the Midway occupation force, and that autumn she fought off Guadalcanal. In the night action of 12–13 November 1942 she was disabled by gunfire southeast of Savo Island. Samidare took off the survivors, Kikkawa among them, and American gunfire sank the abandoned hull.
