- HMS Newcastle (76) Captain from 11 June 1944 · Relieved on 17 April 1945
James Gregson Roper had Newcastle from 11 June 1944 until 17 April 1945. He had her for the later Eastern Fleet strikes, for the Akyab landings, and for the landing on Cheduba Island. Uboat.net says he was killed in an air crash on 19 July 1945, three months after he left her.
Uboat.net records that he was born on 25 February 1901 and died on 19 July 1945. The death line says he was killed in an air crash. It gives no place and no other circumstances.
The rank table lists sub-lieutenant on 15 September 1921, lieutenant on 15 April 1923, lieutenant-commander on 15 April 1931, commander on 30 June 1935, and captain on 31 December 1940. The OBE is dated 8 March 1940. The page says it has no career narrative and does not say what the OBE was for.
He relieved Sidney Hugh Pinchin on 11 June 1944, after Operation Transom. On 17 November he had her when she escorted Indomitable and Illustrious for Operation Outflank. On 17 December she was in Force 67 for Operation Robson, against Belawan Deli. On 2 January 1945 she covered the Akyab landings with Nigeria and Phoebe. On 26 January she landed Royal Marines on Cheduba, and on 31 January she bombarded the west coast of Ramree. Through February and March she was on Indian Ocean convoy defence.
