- HMS Caledon (D53) Captain from 21 November 1944 · Relieved on 27 March 1945
John Ronald Stewart Brown had Caledon from 21 November 1944 until 27 March 1945. The December 1944 bombardments near Piraeus and Salamis fall in his command. Uboat.net starts him on the day it ends Reginald Frederick Nichols. Unithistories ends Nichols on 11 November 1944, so the ten days between those dates are not given to either officer.
Uboat.net records that he was born on 8 October 1900 at Wakefield and died in May 1989 at Cheltenham. It gives no day of death, so no full death date is used.
The rank table lists midshipman on 1 May 1917, acting sub-lieutenant on 15 September 1919, sub-lieutenant on 15 May 1920, acting lieutenant on 15 May 1922, lieutenant on 15 June 1922, lieutenant-commander on 15 June 1930, commander on 31 December 1937, acting captain on 14 January 1943, and captain on 30 June 1944. He retired on 23 August 1953. He was mentioned in despatches on 1 January 1946. The page says it has no career narrative.
He was already a captain when he took Caledon. Mason has her in the Aegean in November 1944 and, in December, bombarding ELAS positions near Piraeus and Salamis with Easton, La Malouine, Sakhtouris and Navarinon. She was released on 12 December. In January 1945 she was still in Greek waters and was nominated to come home. He left on 27 March 1945, the month Mason says she paid off. The pages do not say what the 1946 mention was for.
He retired on 23 August 1953. Uboat.net places his death in May 1989 at Cheltenham.
