- USS Rail (AM-26) Lieutenant (junior grade), 31 January 1943 – 5 November 1943
Leslie Charles Oaks, a lieutenant (junior grade) in the United States Navy, commanded Rail from 31 January 1943 to 5 November 1943. NavSource gives the name, the rank, and both dates, and nothing more about him.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship are on the NavSource line. He relieved Lieutenant Commander Francis Willis Beard.
Rail had sailed from Pearl Harbor on 26 January 1943 with two barges in tow, five days before the date NavSource gives for his taking command. She reached Samoa on 11 February, then went on to Noumea, New Caledonia, and the New Hebrides. In March she moved to the Solomons for the Russell Islands offensive. Through the New Georgia campaign she towed gasoline, oil, and ordnance barges, retrieved landing craft from the beaches, helped in rescue and salvage, and brought damaged ships into Tulagi. In mid-September she returned to Noumea and took up towing in the New Caledonia area. His tour ended on 5 November 1943, before the tow to the New Hebrides that the ship's history places in early January 1944. The ship's history does not say which of those passages he directed in person. It dates the ship's work, and his name is connected to it only by the command dates.
No later command or date of death was found.
