- USS Astoria (CL-90) Captain from August 1948 · Relieved on 30 June 1949
Louis Newcomb Miller had Astoria (CL-90) from August 1948 until 30 June 1949, the day before the cruiser was decommissioned at San Francisco. NavSource lists him as a captain and gives no higher final rank.
uboat.net gives his Naval Academy class as 1923, his birth as 6 January 1900, and his death as 3 March 1975. It gives no place for either date, and no parents. The age it prints, 75, matches those two days.
The same page dates him a lieutenant commander from 23 June 1938. It lists one earlier command: Williams (DD-108), from 6 November 1939 to 24 September 1940, as a lieutenant commander. It says it has no further career narrative. He was a temporary commander from 1 January 1942, a commander from 30 June 1942, and a temporary captain from 1 May 1943.
uboat.net does not list Astoria (CL-90) or any wartime ship after Williams. NavSource places him on the cruiser only from August 1948. By then she had finished the war, a Far East cruise, and was back on the Pacific coast heading for reserve. The command lines follow NavSource: captain from August 1948, relieved on 30 June 1949. The list gives no day in August. DANFS decommissions Astoria (CL-90) on 1 July 1949 and does not name him.
Neither page says what duty he took when the ship went out of commission. uboat.net's death date is 3 March 1975, with no place and no retirement date.
