- USS Vireo (AM-52) Lieutenant (junior grade), 4 October 1944 – 17 September 1945 · The end date is the next officer's start on the NavSource list
Melvin Edward Seymour, a lieutenant (junior grade) in the Naval Reserve, is listed by NavSource in command of Vireo from 4 October 1944. His line has no end date. The next officer, Lieutenant Broughton James Barber, begins on 17 September 1945. That next start is used as the relief. Seymour's tour therefore includes the surrender in August 1945 and ends before the postwar departure from the Philippines in December. He is not Seymour D. Owens.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship are on the line. He followed Steuart Delamater. The reserve designator is NavSource's.
American troops landed on Leyte on 18 October 1944, two weeks after the date used for his start, and Vireo supported those landings into December. She left Morotai on 10 December for Biak and went on to Leyte towing. After calls at Hollandia, Manus, and Biak she took part in the Okinawa operations in April and May 1945. She returned to Morotai, towed to Tacloban on Leyte, and left there on 25 May for Subic Bay. For the rest of the war she ran between the Philippines and New Guinea. The ship's history next has her at postwar towing in Manila, on Luzon, and at Samar, and departing on 20 December 1945. Barber's start on 17 September 1945 puts that postwar towing, and the sailing with Rail and Whippoorwill, after Seymour if the sequence is taken as written. The history does not name Seymour in any of those passages.
No command after 17 September 1945, and no date of death, was found. Vireo was decommissioned on 18 April 1946, under the later captain.
