- USS Duluth (CL-87) Captain from 21 September 1945 · Relieved on 21 February 1948
Samuel Walter DuBois had Duluth (CL-87) from 21 September 1945 until 21 February 1948. NavSource lists him as a captain, class of 1921-A, and gives no later rank. No other fact about him was found.
The NavSource commanding-officer list gives his name, the rank captain, and the class notation 1921-A. It does not give a birth date, a birthplace, or a family. It does not say what the letter A on the class year means.
Nothing in that list says where he was trained or when he was commissioned, beyond the class notation.
He took Duluth on 21 September 1945, after she had entered Tokyo Bay. The fighting was over. The list does not give him an earlier wartime command, and the ship's history does not name him. He had her through the Far East tour of 1946, the Pacific cruise of 1947, and the start of the China-coast patrol.
NavSource relieves him on 21 February 1948. Commander John Joseph Hyland Jr. is the next officer on the list. DuBois is given no later rank, no retirement, and no death.
