He took command on 20 April 1942, after the Indian Ocean raid. Yura became flagship of Destroyer Squadron 4. She was with Admiral Kondo's Support Force at the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August and then ran troops and supplies into Guadalcanal from Shortland. On 25 October 1942, off Guadalcanal on a bombardment mission, SBD dive-bombers hit her aft with two bombs. Through the afternoon more American aircraft attacked. At 1700 he was trying to beach her on Fara Island when another strike reignited her fires. Her crew was taken off and the destroyers Harusame and Yudachi sank her that evening. 135 of her men were killed or wounded.
What became of him afterward is not recorded in the sources used here.
