Thomas Joseph Hickey had the light cruiser Reno (CL-96) from 26 March 1945 until 22 May 1945, while she was in the Charleston Navy Yard repairing torpedo damage. He had already been her executive officer. Hall of Valor says he retired a rear admiral.

Hall of Valor gives his birth as 7 March 1902, his death as 30 August 1967, and his home as St. Louis, Missouri. Nothing further on his family was on that page.

The same page says he graduated from the Naval Academy with the class of 1925. No Lucky Bag was fetched. NavSource's commanding-officer line for Reno does not print a class year for him. It lists him as a captain.

Hall of Valor prints a Silver Star to Commander Thomas Joseph Hickey for 24 October 1944 as executive officer of Reno, off Luzon. The citation says that while the ship was alongside a burning aircraft carrier, under air attack, he organized and directed the firefighting from the cruiser. He stayed in exposed places, and he cleared men off the bow and the port side when the carrier's flight deck raked the cruiser's superstructure. DANFS describes that day alongside Princeton and does not name him. NavSource then gives him command of Reno from 26 March 1945 to 22 May 1945. She had entered the Charleston yard on 22 March. He left her the day before Captain Merle Alexander Sawyer's date on the list. DANFS does not name the relief.

Hall of Valor says he retired as a rear admiral and gives no later ship or shore duty. The death date is 30 August 1967. No burial place was on the page fetched.
