- USS Vicksburg (CL-86) Captain from 12 June 1944 · Relieved on 27 July 1945
William Cecil Vose commanded Vicksburg (CL-86) from her commissioning on 12 June 1944 until 27 July 1945. NavSource lists his rank at the time as captain and his final rank as rear admiral. Uboat.net gives his birth as 19 March 1896 at Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and his death as 31 December 1966 at Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
The uboat.net page is the only fetched source for his birth and death. It does not name his parents or his schooling before the Naval Academy.
The same page heads him USNA 1919. It gives no graduation day and no early ships. It lists him as a commander from 1 October 1938 and as a temporary captain from 17 June 1942. As a commander he had the oiler Ramapo (AO-12) from 12 May 1939 until July 1940. The end of that command is a month, not a day.
DANFS places him in command when Vicksburg commissioned at the Norfolk Navy Yard on 12 June 1944. Uboat.net gives the same start and relieves him on 27 July 1945, which matches NavSource. Under him the cruiser finished shakedown, crossed to Pearl Harbor in January 1945, bombarded Iwo Jima beginning 15 February, and screened Task Group 58.1 before the Okinawa landings. She was later detached for shore bombardment off Okinawa. No citation text for that cruise was fetched, so no decoration is stated here.
NavSource ends his tour on 27 July 1945 and gives no next duty. The uboat.net page says it has no career narrative for him. It records his death on 31 December 1966 at Chelsea. It does not give a retirement date. The rear admiral's rank is NavSource's final-rank column.
