Encounter was an E-class destroyer of the Royal Navy, pennant H10. Hawthorn Leslie built her, and she was commissioned in 1934. Lieutenant Commander Eric Vernon St. John Morgan had her in the Java Sea.

On the afternoon of 27 February 1942 she laid smoke to cover Exeter after an 8-inch shell cut the cruiser's speed. Encounter was not sunk that day.

That night she was ordered to stop. Kortenaer had already broken in two. Encounter took off 113 of Kortenaer's 153 men and carried them into Surabaya.

On 1 March she sailed again with Exeter and Pope. Japanese heavy cruisers and destroyers sank her after Exeter. A Japanese destroyer picked up her survivors the next day. Morgan lived. The loss is not credited to one ship.
