Howe
The Royal Navy battleship HMS Howe (32) at Auckland, New Zealand. The flagship of Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser, Commander in Chief British Pacific Fleet, visited Auckland 2-10 February 1945. Public domain.

HMS Howe, pennant number 32, was a battleship of the Royal Navy. This is the hull that carried that name and number into the fighting of 1945.

Henry William Urquhart McCall took command on 23 March 1945. He was her captain through the Okinawa period dated that spring and through the bombardment that followed, and he was relieved on 13 February 1946.

The battle named for her is Okinawa, dated 1 April 1945. Her part in it was the bombardment of Sakishima in May, and she was not sunk. In May 1945 Howe was with Task Force 57. In that force she bombarded Sakishima. She came through the bombardment afloat. She was not sunk, and she survived the war.

McCall's command ended on 13 February 1946, when he was relieved. Howe had already bombarded Sakishima with Task Force 57 and remained a ship that survived the war.
