Evertsen was an Admiralen-class destroyer, built by Burgerhout at Rotterdam. She was laid down on 5 August 1925, launched on 29 September 1926, and commissioned on 12 April 1928.

She was not with Perth and Houston in the cruiser fight in Bantam Bay. After those two were gone, Murakumo and Shirakumo caught her off Dwars in den Weg at about 02:00 on 1 March 1942. They hit her seven times. Her captain, Walburg Marius de Vries, beached her, and she was lost.

The Dutch wreck record counts 149 men aboard and three dead that night. The rest were taken prisoner. De Vries died on 25 March 1942 in the prisoner camp at Tanjung Karang, on Sumatra.

The photograph was taken by Allan C. Green. The letters on the bow are her pennant, EV.
