Akigumo was a Kagero-class destroyer. Uraga Dock Company launched her on 11 April 1941, and she was commissioned on 27 September 1941. The photograph shows her officers on the forecastle at Tokuyama on 19 January 1944. The bridge is behind them.
At Midway she escorted the oilers of the striking force. She was not in the dive-bomber attack on the carriers. She was not sunk. The destroyer that depth-charged Nautilus, and whose wake led the bombers in, was Arashi, not Akigumo.
On 6 October 1943 she was Rear Admiral Ijuin's flagship, in the covering group at Vella Lavella, with Isokaze and Kazagumo. Yugumo was sunk. One of Yugumo's torpedoes wrecked Chevalier, and O'Bannon then collided with Chevalier. Selfridge lost her bow to a torpedo. The ship that fired it is not known. Akigumo was not sunk. The evacuation got away.
On 11 April 1944 the submarine Redfin torpedoed her southeast of Zamboanga, in the Philippines. She was scouting ahead of the tanker Kiyokawa Maru. She sank by the stern. The tanker was not hit.
