Amagi was named for Mount Amagi. She was launched at Mitsubishi Nagasaki on 15 October 1943 and completed on 10 August 1944. She never embarked her complement of aircraft and stayed in Japanese waters. She moved between Inland Sea ports until she reached Kure in February 1945 and was ordered to be camouflaged.

On 19 March 1945 aircraft of Task Force 58 lightly damaged her with a bomb that struck the edge of the flight deck. In July 1945 repeated airstrikes by American carrier aircraft on Kure hit her several times and she capsized while moored there. She was refloated in 1946 and scrapped later that year.
