Ariake was a Hatsuharu-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Shoichi Yoshida became her captain on 15 October 1940.

On 8 May 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Ariake was in the screen around the carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku. She stayed with that screen and came through the battle.

Akifumi Kawahashi took command on 15 July 1943. He was still captain when the ship was lost on 28 July 1943.

That day, off Cape Gloucester, Ariake stood by the grounded Mikazuki. Aircraft sank her there. The loss is not credited to any one plane.
