Asanagi

Asanagi was a Kamikaze-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. From 8 to 10 December 1941 she and Yunagi were with the Gilberts invasion.

The Battle of Wake Island fell in that same December. A cruiser's record names Asanagi in the bombardment of 11 December 1941. Her own record leaves her out of that bombardment, and it keeps her with the Gilberts force rather than with the first attack on Wake.

She was with the second landing at Wake on 23 December 1941. Kouhei Hanami was her captain for that landing. He was relieved on 10 October 1942. On 22 May 1944, about 200 miles west-northwest of Chichi-jima, USS Pollack torpedoed Asanagi. She sank in about 40 minutes. Eighty-two men were killed.
