Ayanami was a Fubuki-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was sunk off Guadalcanal on 15 November 1942.

Tokiyoshi Arima was her captain from 15 November 1939 until he was relieved on 12 September 1941. Eisuke Sakuma took command the same day.

She fought in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on the battleship night of 15 November 1942. In that action she was in Sendai's van, out with the leading ships of Sendai's formation.

American battleship gunfire sank her off Guadalcanal that night. The loss fell on 15 November 1942, and she went down under that gunfire.

Washington is the ship named for the fire that finished her. Battleship guns from Washington sank Ayanami on 15 November 1942.
