Fubuki was the name ship of the Fubuki class, built at Maizuru. She was laid down on 19 June 1926, launched on 15 November 1927, and completed on 10 August 1928.

Commander Shizuo Yamashita had her from 15 October 1940. At Sunda Strait she was with Shirayuki and Hatsuyuki. She launched nine torpedoes and drew off. The sinking of Perth and Houston is not credited to her, and the ships lost in the anchorage are not credited to her either.

On 11 October 1942, off Savo, American cruisers sank her. That fire is not credited to one ship. Yamashita was killed with her. She was struck on 15 November 1942.
