I-22

Back to I-22

TypeSubmarine (SS)
HullI-22
FateSunk. Type C submarine. Launched a midget submarine off Pearl Harbor and did not enter the harbor. Missing after October 1942. A patrol plane is sometimes credited, and the cause is not settled.

Laid down, displacement, length, beam, draft, speed, and complement are not stored for each hull, so this table leaves them out.

A boat of this type, not a photograph of this hull
No photograph of I-22 was found. This is I-16, a Type C submarine of the same class, on trials in 1940. It is not this boat. Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

I-22 was a Type C submarine of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor. On 7 December 1941 she was off Oahu. That was the day of her recorded part in the attack.

From an offshore position she launched a midget submarine. I-22 stayed outside and did not enter the harbor. After October 1942 she was missing. The hull is carried as sunk. A patrol plane is sometimes credited with the loss. The cause is not settled.
