Ise was the name ship of her class of battleships. Kawasaki at Kobe launched her on 12 November 1916, and she was completed on 15 December 1917. After Midway she was rebuilt like Hyuga: the after turrets came out, and a short flight deck was built over the stern.

Off Cape Engaño on 25 October 1944 she sailed with Ozawa's decoy force. No aircraft were aboard her. Carrier planes of Task Force 38 attacked the Northern Force through the day. Near misses damaged her and did not stop her. She and Hyuga got out. The four carriers did not.

Carrier aircraft sank her at Kure on 28 July 1945. That loss is not credited to one plane.
