Murakumo was a Fubuki-class destroyer, built by Fujinagata. She was launched on 27 September 1928 and commissioned on 10 May 1929.

Hideo Higashi had her from 10 April 1941. At Sunda Strait she launched nine torpedoes. With Shirakumo she later caught Evertsen.

On 12 October 1942, off Guadalcanal, American aircraft wrecked her. That attack is not credited to one plane. Shirayuki took the survivors off, Higashi among them, and finished her that day. He was given Oyashio on 28 November.

The photograph shows the name on her hull.
