Onami was a destroyer of the Yugumo class in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Fujinagata Shipyards built her, and she was launched on 13 August 1942.

She was commissioned on 29 December 1942, entering service as one of the large fleet destroyers of her class. From that date her time in commission would run for less than a year.

The fighting that closes her career is the Battle of Cape St. George, on 25 November 1943. Onami was sunk in that battle.

Her fate is the loss of the ship that day. Cape St. George, 25 November 1943, is where the hull went down, and with that sinking the destroyer commissioned the previous December was gone.

Laid down into the water in mid-August 1942 and placed in commission at the end of December, Onami did not see another year. The battle of 25 November 1943 ended her.
