Shimakaze was one ship. Maizuru built her as an experiment: a destroyer hull driven hard enough to make more than 40 knots, with fifteen torpedo tubes. The sisters that were planned were never built. She was launched on 18 July 1942 and commissioned on 10 May 1943.
On 25 October 1944 she was in Kurita's screen off Samar. She was not sunk that day.
On 11 November 1944 American aircraft caught her in Ormoc Bay, with other destroyers of the convoy run. She was sunk. Not credited to one plane.
