Takanami was a Yugumo-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, built by the Uraga Dock Company. The yard launched her on 16 March 1942. She was commissioned on 31 August 1942.

Masami Ogura became her captain on 31 August 1942, the day she entered service, and he was still in command when she was lost.

On 30 November 1942 she fought in the Battle of Tassafaronga, stationed out ahead of Tanaka's line. American cruiser gunfire sank her there.

The loss is credited to that cruiser gunfire, with no one ship named for the kill. Takanami went down on 30 November 1942 in the Battle of Tassafaronga.
