Yamagumo was an Asashio-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Yasuji Koga was her captain from 15 November 1939. Shiro Ono was her captain from 20 May 1942.

On 11 October 1942 she took part in the Battle of Cape Esperance with the reinforcement group. She was not in the night fight. Her last action was the Battle of Surigao Strait. On 25 October 1944 she was sunk in the strait.

American destroyers and the battle line sank her with gunfire and torpedoes. The loss is not credited to one ship. A later ship carried the name Yamagumo. That hull was not this destroyer.
