Cape Fear was a C1-A freighter, a small Maritime Commission cargo type. Pennsylvania Shipyards at Beaumont, Texas, built her as Maritime Commission hull 694 (yard hull 272) and delivered her in June 1943. She was a merchant ship controlled by the War Shipping Administration, not a Navy ship. This is the 1943 freighter, not the later roll-on ship of the same name.
She sailed in the Southern Garrison Group, Task Group 51.4, with defense troops for the Marshalls, and was at Kwajalein from 5 to 8 February 1944. She was not sunk. She was sold in 1947 and scrapped in 1971. This account rests on the Marshalls order of battle and the Maritime Commission build lists used on this site. No separate history of this ship was found, so nothing beyond those records is claimed here.
