USS American Legion (AP-35) was a United States Navy transport and the name ship of her class. New York Shipbuilding built her at Camden and launched her on 11 October 1919.

The Navy commissioned American Legion on 26 August 1941. She entered service as a transport under the hull number AP-35.

On 7 August 1942, in the landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi, she and Fuller put the first troops ashore on Beach Red at Guadalcanal. Captain Thomas D. Warner was in command that day. Richard Tregaskis sailed in her.

On 1 February 1943 the Navy reclassified her APA-17, the designation of an attack transport. She remained a transport under that number.

American Legion survived the war. The Navy decommissioned her at Olympia on 28 March 1946, and she was sold for scrap on 5 February 1948.
