USS Arkansas (BB-33) was a battleship of the United States Navy. A ship of that kind carried the heavy guns a fleet could bring to bear from the sea, and in 1945 Arkansas was still in commission as one of those ships.
On 1 April 1945 she was in the gunfire force off Okinawa. That force was the group of warships assigned to naval gunfire for the operation, and Arkansas's place in it was offshore with those ships. She came through the day afloat.
George McFadden O'Rear was in command on 1 April 1945, the day Arkansas served with the gunfire force. He remained her commanding officer through the spring and summer.
O'Rear's command ended when he was relieved on 18 August 1945. From the first of April to the middle of August, the battleship that had stood off Okinawa in the gunfire force was the ship under his charge.
Arkansas survived the war. The hull that had been in the gunfire force off Okinawa on 1 April 1945 was still afloat when the conflict ended.
