Brule (APA-66) served as an attack transport of the Gilliam class. Consolidated Steel at Wilmington launched her on 30 June 1944. Patricia Moreell sponsored her. Her father was Vice Admiral Ben Moreell. The ship was commissioned on 31 October 1944.

A turbine casualty sent her back toward Pearl Harbor while the force bound for Iwo Jima was putting to sea.

On 24 February 1945, D-plus-4, she overtook that invasion force and remained offshore through the remainder of the fighting.

Japanese prisoners who had come through the battle, a few of them, were placed in her brig.
