Butte (APA-68) served as an attack transport of the Gilliam class. Consolidated Steel at Wilmington launched her on 20 July 1944, and she was commissioned on 22 November 1944.

Early on 1 April 1945 she reached Okinawa, bringing men of the Army's 7th Infantry Division and sailing in the Southern Attack Force.

Across two weeks she sent troops ashore and helped beat back air attacks, kamikazes among them. Two crewmen were wounded.

Those two weeks off Okinawa were her assault service in the war.
