USS California (BB-44) was a Tennessee-class battleship of the United States Navy, built at Mare Island. She was launched on 20 November 1919 and commissioned on 10 August 1921.

On 7 December 1941, in the Attack on Pearl Harbor, torpedoes and a bomb sank her at her berth. The strike is entered against an unknown attacker and is not pinned to one plane. She was raised from that berth and repaired. She was not lost again, and she survived the war. On 25 October 1944 she was in the battle line at the Battle of Surigao Strait. At Iwo Jima, dated 19 February 1945, she was in the close bombardment on 17 February.

Later ships have carried the name California, a guided-missile cruiser and a submarine among them. Those hulls are not BB-44.
