USS Cowell (DD-547) was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy. She was launched on 18 March 1943 and commissioned on 23 August 1943, with C. W. Parker as her captain from that day.
She served in the Second World War and twice during the Korean War. She survived the war and remained an American warship for many years afterward.
On 17 August 1971 the United States retired Cowell from commission, dropped her from the Naval Vessel Register, and passed the hull to Argentina. In Argentine service she became ARA Almirante Storni.
In October 1975 the British government asked Lord Shackleton, whose father was the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, to survey the economy of the Falkland Islands. Argentina answered in fury and refused him any route that passed through the country.
On 4 February 1976 Almirante Storni opened fire on RRS Shackleton, the ship carrying Lord Shackleton toward the islands. In 1982 Argentina struck the old destroyer off and she was scrapped.
