Dewey was a Farragut-class destroyer, hull DD-349. Bath Iron Works launched her at Bath, Maine, on 28 July 1934. She was commissioned on 4 October 1934.
At the Coral Sea she was in the carrier screen. She was not with Crace's cruisers on the run toward the invasion passage. She was not sunk.
At Midway she was not in the carrier screen. With the destroyer Monssen she guarded the oilers Cimarron and Platte while the carriers fought. She was not sunk.
She came through the war.
