Dickens (APA-161) served as an attack transport of the Haskell class. Oregon Shipbuilding at Portland launched her on 8 September 1944, and the Navy commissioned her on 18 October 1944.

By May 1945 the fight on Okinawa still needed men. She brought reinforcements down from Guam for that beach.

From 15 to 19 May 1945 those reinforcements landed on Okinawa. She then turned back toward Saipan, carrying casualties and troops who had already been relieved.

The mid-May landing on Okinawa was her part in that battle. She survived the war. On 21 May 1946 she was decommissioned. Two battle stars stand on her wartime record.
