Edgecombe (APA-164) served as an attack transport of the Haskell class. Oregon Shipbuilding at Portland launched her on 24 September 1944, and the Navy commissioned her on 30 October 1944.

She went to the Okinawa assault with troops in the holds and boats ready on the davits. When the landing opened, her people were in the boat line.

On 1 April 1945 her troops went ashore in the opening assault at Okinawa. For five days she remained off the beach. Cargo went in, and casualties came back aboard her for the passage to Saipan.

Five days off that beach, landing troops and lifting casualties, were her fight. She came through the war. One battle star stands on her wartime record.
