Freestone (APA-167) served as an attack transport of the Haskell class. Oregon Shipbuilding at Portland launched her on 9 October 1944, and the Navy commissioned her on 9 November 1944.

Leyte Gulf was where she started for the Okinawa assault. She went with the force that would stand offshore when the beach was hit, then move in with a later boat wave.

On 27 March 1945 she left Leyte Gulf. During the assault on 1 April she held in the outer transport area. She then moved inshore and put her men ashore in a later wave.

That later wave was the landing she made at Okinawa. She came through the war. On 17 April 1946 she was decommissioned. One battle star stands on her wartime record.
