Fremont (APA-44) served as an attack transport of the Bayfield class. Ingalls at Pascagoula launched her on 31 March 1943, and she was commissioned on 23 November 1943.

On 16 June 1944 she made her first assault landing, at Saipan. She remained nearby for ten days, sending troops ashore and taking casualties aboard by day, then moving out to sea at night.

On 15 September 1944, as the first troops went ashore on Peleliu, she carried out a diversionary demonstration off Babeldaob. She afterward entered the transport area, and on 17 September her troops landed on Angaur.

On 9 January 1945 she was on hand in Lingayen Gulf while the opening landings went in. Five battle stars stand on her wartime record.
