USS Growler (SS-215) was a submarine of the United States Navy. In the Aleutian Islands in 1942 she made torpedo attacks at Kiska, and on 8 November 1944 she was lost off Mindoro after attacking a convoy.
On 5 July 1942, in that Aleutian fighting, Growler sank Arare in Kiska harbor. Arare went down to a torpedo from the submarine. The same day, outside Kiska, Growler torpedoed Kasumi. Kasumi was damaged and was later repaired.
Off Mindoro on 8 November 1944, Growler attacked a convoy and was lost when the escorts counterattacked. Shigure was one of the escorts in that counterattack.
Shigure was among the escorts that attacked a submarine later identified as Growler, and depth charges were part of the attack. The sinking is not pinned to one ship, and it is not pinned to Shigure’s depth charges alone.
The loss off Mindoro ended the career of this hull. A later ship of the United States Navy also carried the name Growler.
