USS Harry E. Hubbard (DD-748) was launched by Bethlehem Steel at Staten Island on 24 March 1944 and commissioned on 22 July 1944. As flagship of Destroyer Squadron 64 she trained crews for new destroyers until she sailed for Hawaii on 16 January 1945, and she trained out of Pearl Harbor until 17 April.
She arrived off Okinawa on 8 May 1945 to serve as a picket destroyer against the day and night raids and the kamikazes. For nearly two months she fought off the attackers and shot down four kamikazes that tried to crash into her. When Evans and Hugh W. Hadley were badly damaged on 11 May by some 50 kamikazes, she was first to arrive and went alongside Evans to give firefighting, damage control and medical aid. She did the same for Barry on 24 and 25 May, shooting down two kamikazes as she escorted Barry from her picket station into Kerama Retto. One plane was blown apart by her gunners about 50 yards from the ship.
She stayed off Okinawa until 24 July 1945, then escorted occupation troops to Jinsen, Korea.
