Maury was a Gridley-class destroyer, hull DD-401. Bethlehem at San Francisco laid her down on 24 March 1936. She was launched on 14 February 1938 and commissioned on 5 August 1938. Four ships were built in the class.
At Midway she was in Spruance's screen, with Enterprise and Hornet. She was not hit. The Japanese carriers lost on 4 June are not credited to her.
On 30 November 1942 she was third in the destroyer van off Tassafaronga. Fletcher led. Perkins was second. Drayton was behind her. The cruisers followed: Minneapolis, New Orleans, Pensacola, Honolulu, and Northampton. Tanaka had eight destroyers on a supply run. American cruiser gunfire sank Takanami. That sinking is not credited to Maury. Japanese torpedoes blew the bows off Minneapolis and New Orleans, hit Pensacola, and sank Northampton. Those torpedoes are not pinned to one destroyer. Honolulu was not hit. Maury was not hit.
On 6 August 1943 she was in Commander Moosbrugger's division at Vella Gulf, with Dunlap and Craven. Lang, Sterett, and Stack were the other three American destroyers. Six destroyers caught four Japanese destroyers running troops to Kolombangara. Hagikaze, Arashi, and Kawakaze were sunk. The credit belongs to the group, not to Maury alone. A dud torpedo passed through Shigure's rudder. That shot is not pinned to one American destroyer. Shigure fired eight torpedoes as she left. All missed. Maury was undamaged.
She survived the war. She was decommissioned on 19 October 1945 and sold for scrap in 1946.
