USS McKean was a United States Navy ship built at Union Iron Works in San Francisco. She was launched on 4 July 1918 and commissioned on 25 February 1919.

She entered service as the Wickes-class destroyer DD-90. The same hull was later converted into a high-speed transport and numbered APD-5, a ship used to carry troops into a landing.

On 7 August 1942 she took part in the landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. In that operation she served as a high-speed transport and landed troops at Tulagi. John D. Sweeney was in command.

The landing at Tulagi is the combat duty recorded for her. She came to that shore as APD-5, and the troops she put ashore there were her share of the Guadalcanal and Tulagi landings.

An aircraft torpedo sank her off Empress Augusta Bay on 17 November 1943. The sinking is not credited to one plane. With that loss the converted destroyer ended her service as the high-speed transport APD-5.
