Newberry (APA-158) served as an attack transport of the Haskell class. Oregon Shipbuilding at Portland launched her on 24 August 1944, and the Navy commissioned her on 7 October 1944.

On 31 December 1944 she sailed from Pearl Harbor with a Marine battalion for Iwo Jima. The 1st Battalion of the 23rd Marines was the heart of the load. Their shore party came along, and so did half of A Company from the 4th Pioneer Battalion.

She put those Marines ashore at Iwo Jima. Across the ten days that followed D-day she took aboard 439 wounded. On 27 February 1945 she got under way for Guam.

Iwo Jima was the assault she carried, and the wounded she embarked were part of that same fight. She came through the war. On 21 February 1946 the Navy decommissioned her.
