Todd-Pacific at Tacoma laid Puget Sound down on 12 May 1944 and launched her on 20 November. Mrs. Bert A. Teats of Sheridan, Oregon, sponsored her. Captain Charles F. Coe commissioned her at Tacoma on 18 June 1945.
After trials and fitting out in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard she steamed south on 6 July for shakedown out of San Diego and embarked Marine Air Group 6. She left San Diego on 8 September for a short period of training in Hawaii, then went on to support the occupation of Japan. She entered Tokyo Bay on 14 October 1945. Her aircraft joined the show of strength and flew anti-mine patrols for the landings of the Tenth Army at Matsuyama and Nagoya. Tactical training then took her to the Philippines, Hong Kong, and the Marianas.
She loaded surplus aircraft at Apra Harbor and put to sea on 6 January 1946 for Pearl Harbor, where she offloaded them. At San Diego on 23 January, Marine Air Group 6 left the ship, and she prepared to bring veterans home. Between February and May she made two runs between San Diego and Pearl Harbor and one between Alameda and Okinawa, carrying 1,200 troops and surplus aircraft.
On 24 May she steamed north, entered the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 1 June, and was decommissioned there on 18 October 1946. She joined the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Tacoma. On 12 June 1955 she was redesignated CVHE-113, and later AKV-13. She was struck on 1 June 1960 and sold for scrap on 10 January 1962.
